NBSE organizes competency-based education workshop

The Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE), in collaboration with Dream a Dream, organized a two-day online workshop on Competency-Based Education for the principals and teachers on 8th and 9th September 2022. Over 500 teachers participated in this interactive workshop.

The focus of the workshop was on competency-based assessment which is an important component of National Education Policy 2020. The workshop provided an overview of Competency-Based Education highlighting core principles of CBE, key elements in curriculum design and teacher learning process, and hands-on experience with core assessments education policy, 2020.

The resource persons from Dream a Dream shared the framework for developing a Competency- Based curriculum and how to provide hands on experience on various assessments in CBE.

Speakers for the sessions were: Bhavani Arumugam and Puneet Balamurugan from the Design and development team of Dream a Dream, and Dr Swetha Bhushan, Dr Joseph Thomas and Dr Sreehari Ravindranath from the Research and impact team at Dream a Dream.

The session was moderated by Sharique Mashhadi, Associate Director, Strategic Partnerships, Dream a Dream.

The speakers emphasized how competency-based learning will foster a culture of equity and inclusivity in the classroom and how to re-imagine education beyond academic performance and relook at the curriculum for enabling children to prepare for life.

The workshop dwelt on giving a compressive view on designing a competency-based system for equity and inclusion where we enable every child and teacher to thrive.

In her address, Asano Sekhose, Chairman, NBSE commented, “Surely the message is clear that we need to embrace change and we are on the way”.

Teachers and principals from various schools in Nagaland shared their practical challenges and invited suggestions for implementing CBE.

The workshop was a great success as teachers realized and reflected that education is not just about enhancing the cognitive development of children, but the focus is on the all-round development of the child, and it is high time to emphasize the importance of life skills, social and emotional skills.

Rangumbuing Nsarangbe, Secretary, NBSE in his concluding remark said that as envisaged in NEP 2020, a time has come for us to shift from traditional teaching practices to CBE. All stakeholders in education need to reorient and refocus our direction to achieve what the policy envisages. The journey has begun and we all need to walk together to implement CBE.
