Mirabai Chanu smashes CWG record in gold medal winning performance

CWG 2022 Live Day 2: Mirabai Chanu secured a gold medal in the women’s 49kg weightlifting final at the Commonwealth Games 2022, which was also India’s first in the ongoing edition.

She lifted 84kg (snatch) in her opening attempt, and went on to lift 88kg in her second. Her third attempt of 90kg was unsuccessful. She started the clean and jerk round with a 109kg lift and followed it up with 113kg. However, her third attempt of 115kg was unsuccessful.

Earlier in the day, weightlifter Sanket Sargar broke the deadlock and clinched a silver medal in the men’s 55kg category. Gururaja Poojary then secured a bronze in the men’s 61 kg finals. Boxer Lovlina Borgohain will also step in the ring with her bout slated to start around midnight. The Indian women hockey team will face Wales in a Group B encounter.

The unit had opened their campaign with an emphatic 5-0 win over Ghana on Friday. Srihari Nataraj will be taking part in the medal race after qualifying for the final last night. His event starts at 1:35 am IST.
