Mokokchung organizes program on “Amur Falcon protection”

Mokokchung Forest Division in collaboration with Wildlife Division Dimapur today organized a program on “Amur Falcon in Mokokchung” under the theme “Listening to our own voices” at the Forest Office, Marepkong.

The program today dwelled on the story of Amur Falcon in Nagaland with special reference to Mokokchung emphasizing on bird migration and its significance. The program also included the way forward in protecting and safe passage of the falcons from Mokokchung. Every year, the small resilient birds make the daring voyage from breeding grounds in Russia, China and Mongolia to winter in South Africa migrating in large flocks across the north eastern states of India and over the Arabian Sea.

Covering around 22000 kilometer, it roosts in Nagaland before the onward journey to South Africa. Speaking at the program, Wildlife Warden Dimapur Tokaho Kinimi said that safety of Amur Falcon is everyone’s responsibility as Nagaland has been tagged the Amur Falcon capital of the world. He further urged upon the gathering to reaffirm towards the conservation and safe passage of the bird. He acknowledged that the conservation efforts have so far been successful in the state and urged for creating more awareness in the days to come.
