Leishemba Sanajaoba urged the Centre to put Meetei/Meitei Mayek in Indian currency notes

Imphal, Feb 12: Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba has urged the Centre to put Meetei/Meitei Mayek (Manipuri script) in Indian currency notes today.

Addressing Parliament during ‘zero hour’, Sanajaoba said the Manipuri language-Meetei/Meiteilon along with other languages like Konkani and Nepali was included in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution on August 20, 1992. Accordingly, Konkani and the other languages except Manipuri have been depicted on the currency notes.

Stating that the Manipuri script-Meetei/Meitei Mayek is being taught at Master’s level at present, Sanajaoba said Manipuri language written in Meetei/Meitei Mayek should be epresented/ depicted in the Indian currency notes.

Inclusion of the Manipuri language/script in the Indian currency notes is a wish and a long cherished dream of the Manipuri people and Chief Minister N Biren Singh, he said.
