Workshop on Promoting traditional natural resources held at Tamenglong

Tamenglong, Jan. 18: A one day workshop for civil society organisations on role of civil society organizations in promoting traditional natural resources management practices was held at Peace Hall Tamenglong district headquarters.

The workshop was organised by Nature Learning Centre Forest Department Government of Manipur under National Mission on Himalayan studies ministry of environment, forest and climate change, government of India.

District Forest Officer Tamenglong Kh. Hitler Singh attended as chief host. Rongmei Naga Council Manipur President Ramkung presided over the workshop.

In his chief host speech, Kh Hitler Singh said that forest department alone is not possible to protect and preserve the forest. Civil society organisations and forest department needs to work together for future prosperity.

Regarding jhuming cultivation practiced by hill dwellers, he understood the traditional practiced but he said that if anyone wants to cut trees one needs to consult the department concerned.

However, forest where endangering wildlife dwell on inhibited forest should not be cut down, he stated.

Enviromentalist Member Board of wildlife Manipur Salem Rajesh, wildlife warden Honorary Nehemiah Panmei, Rain Forest Club Tamenglong Director Mordecai Panmei spokes as resource persons.

Involvement of civil society organisations on community reserved forest or protection of Forest flora and fauna will help the forest department tremendously.

One resource person wildlife warden Honorary Nehemiah Panmei mentioned that with coming of Christianity people are not longer scare and afraid to cut down big tress or big wildlife where forefathers considered gods property or god dwell in the big tree.

Forefathers did not hunt during wild animal mating season or breeding season, this kind of prohibition should be reintroduce in the presence society to enable to preserve and protect wildlife, he added.
