Two qualifications to set apart an animal as clean. Chew cud ➕ have cloven/split hooves

Lev 11:3, The animals which chew cud, slowly chew their partly digested food over & over again before they finally swallow their food.

As I thought about it, this verse came to mind:

This book of the Law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it by day and by night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall act wisely. (Josh 1:8)

A perfect picture of ‘chewing on the Word’. It is not enough to read the Word. It is important to think about it little by little through the day, thinking about it verse by verse… discussing it with family & friends to gain more perspectives… and as we ‘digest’ the Word, it becomes our nourishment. We gain important principles for life that give us wisdom to walk in paths of righteousness.

Cloven hooves or divided hooves speak of separation: Israel had been called out of Egypt & separated from the other nations to belong to God… so that they could be trained by Him in an understanding of clean/unclean, righteous/unrighteous. By allowing themselves to be transformed by His training, they were to become His witnesses, testifying to HIS character & goodness in a world which was confused about morality & the character of God. [Rf Is 43:10] We too have been called out, to belong to God, to know God’s love, be transformed by His Word+Spirit and proclaim Him to the nations. [Rf 1 Th 4:7, 1 Jn 4:16, Rom 12:1-2, 1 Pt 2:9]

Cloven hooves help the animals to walk easily over uneven ground & maintain their balance over rocky terrain. The wisdom of the world is often a mixture of truth & lies. When we lean on our own/world wisdom, we end up making silly decisions. It is the LORD who gives wisdom; from Him come knowledge and understanding. [Pro 2:6] Walking according to God’s wisdom separates us out from the world way of doing things. [Rf Jn 17:17] When we lean on His wisdom + Spirit, then, like mountain goats climb cliffs & leap over obstacles, we become able to negotiate sticky situations wisely. [Rf Ps 18:33]

⚜ God was teaching Israel that one is defiled by what one feeds on. For us, it is a symbolic warning to watch out what we feed our minds on. An idea is like a virus, resilient, highly contagious. The smallest seed of an idea can grow. It can grow to define or destroy you. Christopher Nolan

➡ So even as we feed on God’s Word, let’s evaluate the things we are feeding our minds with from TV, social media etc… >> Are those ideas going to defile us or build us up?

Verse to chew on: Study earnestly to present yourself approved to God, a workman that does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth. (2Ti 2:15)

Abba Father we want to be those who think deeply on Your Word… so that Your Word is digested & becomes part of us. Thank You that through Your Word we grow in discernment and thus our feet become like hind’s feet upon the high places. Teach us & train us. In Jesus Name. Amen.

These shall you eat of all that are in the waters, whatsoever has fins and scales in the waters, in the seas and in the rivers them shall you eat"

⚡ In this chapter Gods laws concerning clean and unclean food. We see a long list of animals, fishes, and birds which are clean to eat
and another list containing unclean ones.

⚡ I am not sure, how many of us can say that I do consume the beasts, fishes and birds as per the list in Leviticus-11. But while reading this chapter, God gave me an insight that a Holy God wants to know His people that Holiness is healthiness.

⚡ Do you want to be healthy, be holy! God has made holiness the moral condition necessary to the health of this Universe.

⚡Whatever is holy is healthy and whatever is unclean according to the Bible will lead us to the sickness, that will ultimately end in death. The large que in the multi speciality hospitals in our cities reveals this truth. Let us there fore reconsider our menu list.

⚡ The Scripture points out we should avoid the following categories of food
(i) Food that causes to lose inheritance or birthright (Genesis:25:34 and Hebrews:12:16)
(ii) Food that defiles ( Daniel:I:8)
(iii) Food that causes our brothers to offend ( 1Corinthians:8:13)
(iv) Food that makes us liars, evil beasts and slow bellies (Titus: l : 12)

David says, " All the prosperous of the earth, eat and worship" (Psalm:22:29)
Paul says, "Whether therefore you eat or drink or whatsoever you do, do all to the glory of God" (1 Corinthians:10:31)

Purification Law had a Built-in Provision for the Future....A poor mother unable to offer a sacrificial lamb, will one day be carrying a Living Sacrificial Lamb in her arms....Leviticus 12:8 & Luke 2:22-24

In Leviticus 11-14, there are laws concerning health, diet, preventive medicine, personal hygiene, mother and baby welfare and infection control.

There is enough information to write out a Procedure Book for Principles and Guidelines for any Hospital, for their Primary Health Care System, Maternity Care, Wellness Clinic and for an Isolation Unit.

God wanted a Community of Healthy People. He didn't want them to come in contact with any infection in the heat of their desert wanderings.

Some research has shown that statistically, the Orthodox Jewish Community are generally healthier because of their kosher food and that they have lower incidents of certain diseases. But, the younger modern generations of the Jewish community, however, are experiencing more lifestyle diseases.

The creation of life is God's plan, and is beautiful. Women are chosen to bring forth life and they are agents of life. They give life. There is no life without the shedding of blood. The shedding of blood monthly and during childbirth is part of the cleansing of their bodies. It takes about 40 days for the body to be restored back to its non pregnant state. During this period the body is getting back to its natural function.

This 40 day period of separation from the holy things was for cleanliness' sake and was just, simply because God said to do it, so that, she can be restored to wholeness and wellness. "Forty", throughout the Bible is a time of testing. A woman during the 40 days goes through so much of hormonal changes that can affect her emotionally and if not given the right support can lead to postpartum emotional distress. She needs a sensitive approach spiritually, physically and emotionally.

Jesus' parents had to keep the Laws concerning Purification, Circumcision and Sin Offering and Burnt Offering. Mary and Joseph fulfilled after the birth of Jesus, Jesus was born under the Law and He came to fulfill the Law. He was the end of the Law, Romans 10:4.

These offerings were for the inherited sin of the flesh through Adam and Eve's sin, which was not a deed but an inheritance. The burnt offering was offered as a devotion to God. The sin involved was not her own sin, but sinful nature of all of humanity, until the new birth in Christ. Jesus was dedicated to God on the 40th day of His mother's purification.

Mary, had to observe the first seven days after child birth as unclean days, Leviticus 12:2, though she was in some respects free from her uncleanness, yet not altogether to fulfill the circumcision law. After the circumcision on the eighth day, she remained unclean till the end of forty days.

Leviticus 12:3 "And in the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised."

On the eighth day, Joseph and Mary followed these instructions at the birth of Jesus, Luke 2:21. Circumcision was the sign of the Abrahamic Covenant, Genesis 17:9-14, which was Incorporated into the Mosiac Laws

Mary and Joseph, on the eighth day named their baby was Jesus. He was not dedicated in the temple until the fortieth day.

Eight is the numerical number for New Beginning in Hebrew. Our new beginning starts when we receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior so that we don't have to wander like the Israelites for Forty years in the wilderness, on their way to the Promised Land.

Leviticus 12:4 "And she shall then continue in the blood of her purifying three and thirty days; she shall touch no hallowed thing, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purifying be fulfilled."

Luke 2:22 "And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present Him to the Lord;"

It is interesting to note that God made allowance for a woman who was poor to bring a lesser sacrifice for her cleansing as part of her purification rituals.

And if she is not able to bring a lamb, then she may bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons; one as a burnt offering and the other as a sin offering. So the priest shall make atonement for her, and she will be clean.’” Leviticus 12:8.

If she is not able to bring a lamb, God knew that not every family in Israel could afford to bring a lamb for sacrifice at the birth of a child. Therefore, He also allowed the lesser sacrifices of two turtledoves or two young pigeons. Jesus’ parents could only offer a pair of turtledoves, Luke 2:22-24, at His birth.

This shows that Jesus did not come from a wealthy family, for our sake, He became poor and nailed poverty on the Cross, so we can be rich in Christ Jesus 2Corinthians 8:9.

Dear Child of GodRemember that, though Mary and Joseph could not afford to offer a sacrificial lamb, God saw them as the Perfect Parents to raise His Son, the Lamb of God as the Sacrificial Lamb who became the Sin Offering for us.

Mary, could not afford a sacrificial lamb but she knew she was carrying a Living Sacrifice in her arms. Mary who was poor, was indeed so rich holding the Priceless and Ultimate Sacrifice for the whole the World which God so Loved....Amen.
