Joshua Witnessing, farewell address, Come out and be separate
4th December 2019
⚔ The Battle is the LORD'S ⚔
After many years of slavery in Egypt and 40 years of wandering in the desert the Israelites were finally allowed to enter the land promised to their fathers. Joshua was destined to turn the promise into a reality.
The theme of the book therefore is establishment of Israel in the Promised Land. In Joshua it was the LORD who won the victories and gave Israel all the land He had sworn to give their forefathers. The LORD asked Joshua to be strong and courageous and promised to be with him wherever he went.
Rahab was a prostitute who helped the two spies sent by Joshua to spy the land, especially Jericho. She hid them in a house and sent away the men who came looking for them. So God blessed her and preserved her entire family when Jericho was destroyed.
To cross the Jordan the priests with the ark of the covenant had to pass ahead of the people. When their feet touched the water, the water from the upstream stopped flowing. The priests stood on the dry ground in the middle of Jordan when the Israelites crossed Jordan. As a memorial twelve stones were taken from the middle of Jordan and set up in Gilgal.
All the men who had left Egypt died due to their rebellion. Their sons were not yet circumcised. So Joshua got all the men circumcised. Manna stopped when they ate the food of the Promised Land.
The LORD alone gave them victory over Jericho. In front of the ark seven priests with trumpets had to march sounding their trumpets. The armed men marched ahead of the priests. The rear guard followed the ark. For six days they had to march around the city once everyday. On the seventh day they had to march around the city seven times.
When they heard a loud blast of the trumpets the people had to shout aloud. At once the walls of Jericho collapsed. The whole city was burnt up. Only Rahab and her family were saved. The faith of Rahab is mentioned in the New Testament (Heb 11:31; James 2:25). Only the silver and gold articles, bronze and iron were put in the treasury. The LORD was with Joshua and his fame spread throughout the land.
Nothing is Impossible with God
