Be holy ๐ŸŒน Not "holier-than-thou"

Aaronโ€™s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in themย and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before theย Lord, contrary to his command.ย ย So fire came out from the presence of theย Lordย and consumed them, and they died before theย Lord.ย Lev 10:1-2

๐Ÿ”ฅThe incident of Nadab and Abihu being struck down dead for offering unholy fire made me think about holiness...
This incident where they were punished by death for offering unauthorized fire, contrary to Gods command almost seems to be too extreme a punishment for their sin..
Yet on closer examination, it was a punishment for direct disobedience to God's commands. Both of them were doing things their way and not God's way...

God said to the Israelites... be holy as I am holy . ( Lev 11:44) Again in 1 Peter, this same verse is repeated...

What is holiness?
Being set apart, being sanctified, being obedient to God...are some definitions.

Are we set apart?
Not looking down on others but keeping ourselves pure for God.
Is what He says most important to us? More than the externals, I believe it is the state of our hearts that is important to God. Are we obedient to His commands- not just the Ten Commandments but every injunction of the New Testament we see commands for holy living such as:

Forgive one another...pray for your enemies....give cheerfully, fear not, have no anxiety about anything, give thanks in all circumstances, rejoice always, pray without ceasing...and it goes on. As we read the Word we discover Gods rules for holy living, abundant living.

Difference between being "holier-than-thou" and being truly holyโšก
Someone I know, once said that they are very uncomfortable around holy people. I think what they really meant was " holier-than-thou" people who contrive to prove their superiority to others by their goody-goody attitude, bent on impressing others. ( Lord let me not be like that! If I ever am, check me, Lord!)Such people are uncomfortable to be around for sure.

On the other hand, one who strives to be truly holy will be humble and sweet, pleasant to interact with. A joy to have around. How could they not be delightful to be with- they would exhibit the fruit of the Holy, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control....

If we strive to be people who please God, considering all the time what God would be happy with in every situation, I believe we will become a holy people. Really desiring to please God in all things. Moving on even if we fall at times, not giving in to despair. Relying on the Holy Spirit to help us and not relying on ourselves.

Yes , the Holy Spirit is truly holy and He is within us and will help us in all our weaknesses when we allow Him. He will draw us into true holiness which is always exciting, adventurous, atttactive and pleasing to God!
I cannot be holy by myself but the Holy Spirit within me can make me holy when I allow Him to fill me!
Again, being holy is not to be boring at all as people sometimes think.
I like this quote from C.S.Lewis: How little people know who think that holiness is dull. When one meets the real is irresistible." ๐Ÿ™Œ
C.S. Lewisย

๐Ÿ™๐ŸปLord: Forgive me for times I have exhibited a "holier-than-thou" attitude instead of being truly holy. I need you Holy Spirit to lead and guide my every thought and word and deed so that I can please you Lord and be truly holy, attracting others to you.
